The Assistant Director General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Dr. Abdul Hakim Elwaer, expressed his pride in the partnership with the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC), noting that FAO has achieved outstanding successes through its partnership with NARC in the field of enhancing food security and facing climate change and water scarcity through several pioneering projects implemented in Jordan.
Elwaer said that the linkages of cooperation and trust built by NARC make us look forward to having further cooperation and networking, especially in light of the successes that have been achieved in light of the scientific and research reputation that has been built by NARC’s staff in many scientific fields, particularly those relevant to agriculture, water, energy and climate change.
During a tour of NARC various departments, Elwaer asserted on the efforts of FAO as a specialized Organization of the United Nations that leads international efforts to eradicate hunger and provide assistance to achieve food security through the development and modernization of food and agricultural systems, while expressing FAO’s readiness to facilitate regional cooperation between countries, including Jordan, which is covered by the regional office for the Near East and North Africa, based in Cairo, especially in the field of exchanging experiences and data. It is worthy to mention that FAO’s activities in Jordan focus on the agriculture and food security sectors, and it has a representative office in Amman that would enhance access to funding from donors and direct them to implement projects in these two strategic sectors, as the organization’s projects in Jordan include facilitating the operations of technology transfer and technical support, capacity building of farmers and workers in the agricultural sector and other related areas.
The Director General of NARC, Dr. Nizar Haddad, stated that food security in Jordan is a top priority for the government at the national level, as Jordan aspires to be a regional hub in this field, and to exploit opportunities to benefit from its geographical location in the Arab region, its security and stability, explaining the importance of the regional cooperation in this field and support for agricultural research programs, through which the Jordanian government can be assisted in achieving food security, given the overall challenges that Jordan faces and their impact on food security and supply chains, as well as the effects of climate change. Haddad commended on the existing partnership with FAO and the importance it attaches to Jordan, emphasizing on the need to reinforce the cooperation with FAO.
Mr. Nabil Assaf, FAO Representative in Jordan, addressed the cooperation and successes in the agricultural fields and procedures to face climate change, which came as a result of cooperation with NARC, the scientific arm of the Ministry of Agriculture, in line with FAO’s strategy in supporting pioneering sectors.
