A member of the Agricultural Committee in the Decentralization Board of Kerak, Eng. Izzat Al Tarawneh, commended the pioneering role of the National Agricultural Research Center (NARC) to face climate changes, through the production of new varieties of barley that are tolerant to climate conditions and low rainfall rates.

Al Tarawneh said, during the field day implemented by Al Ghuwair Agricultural Station within the activities of the project “Use of genetic diversity in Evolutionary Plant Breeding”, that climate changes had a clear impact on the agricultural sector and crops in addition to the low rainfall rates, which oblige us to find solutions to these challenges that are negatively affecting the agricultural sector and its production, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Engineer Doa’a Al Majali, head of Al Ghuwair Agricultural Research Station Department, expressed the importance of this field day in enhancing food security and promoting the sustainability of the agricultural sector, and that wouldn’t be possible without the support of the relevant authorities, local and international partners. She added that NARC researchers aspire to work in effective partnerships with the Agricultural Committee of the Decentralization Board to improve the Agricultural Sector.

The field day targeted a number of barley farmers in Kerak governorate. Al Majali added that the participants were briefed on the varieties of barley grown in the station’s fields and evaluated the cultivated varieties to produce good varieties that suit the prevailing climate conditions in Kerak.
